Camp 1

Scientist camp!

June 19-22 2023  /  9:00-12:30  /  Good Roots Farm

Entering 1st Grade – 5th Grade 2024-25

Fun experiments. Observation. Hands-on exploration. Immersion in nature.

Science Week will focus on:
  • Science in nature, on the farm, and in our world.
  • Curiosity and imagination.
  • Growth mindset.
  • Learning through seeing and doing.
  • Working and thinking together to achieve a shared goal.
  • Achievement through trial and error.
  • Confidence.

Camps are supervised by vetted, experienced educators and/or background-checked school volunteers, and Good Roots Farm staff. Enrichment providers are experienced and/or certified art, music, dance, and theater instructors. 

Facilitated experiences will comprise roughly 1.5 hours of the day while much of the day will involve child-directed activity, hands-on exploration, and collaborative play.

All camps will explore nature and farm life!

 

Camp 2

World travEler camp! 

July 10-13 2022  /  9:00-12:30  /  Good Roots Farm

Entering 1st Grade – 5th Grade 2024-25

Camp 2 will focus on:
  • Planting, stewardship, and harvesting plants for food and other uses.
  • Arts, culture, food, and language at home and around the world.
  • Exploring traditions and innovations in our fascinating world.
  • Being a good citizen and neighbor.
  • Appreciating differences and similarities in people.

Camps are supervised by vetted, experienced educators and/or background-checked school volunteers, and Good Roots Farm staff. Visiting enrichment providors are public field experts or educators.

Facilitated experiences will comprise roughly 1.5 hours of the day while much of the day will involve child-directed activity, hands-on exploration, and collaborative play.

All camps will explore nature and farm life!

 

 

Camp 3

ARTIST CAMP!

July 31 – August 3  /  9:00-12:30  /  Good Roots Farm

Entering 1st Grade – 5th Grade 2024-25

Camp 3 will focus on:

  • Art appreciation.
  • Visual thinking strategies.
  • Self-expression and confidence.
  • Making art inspired by nature.
  • Mastering new skills and exploring our talents.
  • Observation and listening.

Camps are supervised by vetted, experienced educators, and/or background-checked school volunteers, and Good Roots Farm staff. Visiting enrichment providers are experienced field experts or educators.

Facilitated experiences will comprise roughly 1.5 hours of the day while much of the day will involve child-directed activity, hands-on exploration, and collaborative play.

All camps will explore nature and farm life!

Q & A

01.

Who will be mentoring?  

All camps will be supervised by certified educators, farm staff experienced with working with children, and/or background-checked school volunteers. There will always be multiple adults present. Visiting enrichment providers are local educators and/or established field experts who work in the local community.

How many children will be in each camp?

Our camps are limited to 20 participants per camp.

Where will the camps be held?  

Good Roots Farm (1.5 miles north of Brookings on Medary) — portions of each camp will take place in the fields as well as in the recently restored 97-year old barn and other areas deemed safe for children to learn, play, and explore.

What about inclement weather?

We love the old Norwegian saying, “There is no such thing as bad weather. There are only bad clothes.” Please dress and prepare campers for South Dakota’s ever-surprising climate. A rain jacket and waterproof footwear for rainy days and sunscreen for outdoor journeys. In the event of severe weather threats, we will communicate plans as they develop. If a camp day is cancelled due to threatening weather conditions, a consolation activity will be sent home for the kids. Thusly, days cancelled for extrene weather will not be refunded.

Will meals be provided?

Meals will not be provided. We encourage packing a ‘picnic-able’ snack for your child.

What ages are suitable for these mini-camps?

Campers who are 6 – 11 years old. If your child has specific needs, you are welcome to stay to support your child.
